A tale of climate shock and change, two centuries apart.

In April 1815, the largest volcano eruption in recorded history occurred on the island of Sumbawa in what is now Indonesia. As the ash particulates from the eruption were lifted into the heights of the atmosphere and proceeded to affect the weather and climate systems around the globe, the effects of this singular event would be felt for years to come.
This book covers the climate shock that occurred in the 1810s due to the eruption of Mount Tambora, although no one at the time would have been able to put that information together. Day looks at the effects of the shock on various places around the world. From the lack of a harvest driving the American push out West, to constant thunderstorms in Switzerland sparking the seed of Frankenstein in Mary Godwin Shelley’s mind, Day shows the interconnectedness of everything. With the perspective in mind, he suggests that the reader take a look at the world around them today and see what is going on with the climate around us and what effects have we been ignoring all this while.
