Flea released a solo album… a solid and sophisticated jazz album.

It’s not a secret but it might be a surprise to some that Flea’s first love is jazz trumpet and he’s honed his playing in spare moments as a member of Red Hot Chili Peppers. Clued in by an intriguing clip from his appearance on Late Night covering Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin Bout You”, I tracked down Honora. It’s definitely worth a listen. It’s not a strange vanity project. It’s a thought-out and fascinating exploration with six original pieces and four covers. Also, much love for Nick Cave’s collab on “Wichita Linesman.” As is often my metric, this would make for a fabulously mellow afternoon drive. I think it genuinely works as a first album and I would love to see an even deeper dive in his next project.
