“To be a great champion you must believe you are the best. If you’re not, pretend you are.”
This book is so much more than what you think. Today we think of Muhammad Ali as one of the greatest boxers in history, if not the greatest. We focus less on everything that was happening in the world during his life: segregation, racism, religious intolerance, the Vietnam War, etc. Of course, this book includes his commentary on his fights, as well as insights on boxing. More surprisingly, it includes the story of his life intertwined with the events in the world, including his politics, social choices, religious choices, and his family life.
As a bonus, Dion Graham’s performance first made me think that Ali himself was narrating it. It makes for an excellent audiobook.
Note: this book was written in 1975, there has since been minor controversy regarding embellishment and hardline views, that evolved later in Ali's life.
