A madcap, charming, and wonderfully illustrated tale

Kat Hats is a refreshingly oddball picture book about a hat shop that rents out cats as hats, and an adventure that one of those cats embarks upon to save the day. The colorful and lively gouache illustrations bring the madcap tale to exuberant life, and silly details are perfectly balanced by their matter-of-fact presentation (“[T]his moose was using his antlers as a hat rack,” one page says. “This was not unusual, as lots of moose do it.”) Kat Hats was not what I expected—the cover illustration really undersells it—and I was completely won over by its charm. Recommended for kids aged 4-8 (and everyone else!) with a seriously quirky sense of humor.
