A dual-narrated audiobook about the fallout from a single action.

During a freshman assembly, Dayton accepts a dare to shout a slur at the guest speaker. One word, six letters. The repercussions of that one word spiral out in a way that no one could have predicted - there are the natural consequences for Dayton: suspension, grounding, suspicion from his fellow classmates. Meanwhile, another freshman, Farshid, starts hearing that word behind his back throughout the school hallways - are people saying it about him, or are they just talking about Dayton? Farshid’s experience with slurs have so far hinged on his Iranian heritage, so this word is a new experience for him.
After the Incident, both Farshid and Dayton feel the need to project a certain type of masculinity in front of their peers - Farshid throws himself into exercise and bulking up, while Dayton builds a new friendship with Brody, who has a more devil-may-care attitude. Over the course of the school year, as their paths cross, both teens will need to figure out for themselves what kind of men they want to grow up to become.
I really loved the way this book was written and narrated - both characters had moments where they were in the right and in the wrong. It emphasized the importance of self-reflection, taking accountability, but also keeping an open mind about others instead of basing your whole opinion of a person on a knee-jerk reaction to a single action. This also isn’t a single-issue book - it looks at the strength it takes to stand up to one’s friends, as well as standing up to one’s own self-image.
Also, for anyone worrying about the language used in the book, no slurs are ever said/written in the text.
