Blood of the Old Kings

It’s got dragons. It’s got sorcerers. It’s got a guy who’s worried about breaking his glasses.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started this book but was captivated by the structure of the ruling Empire and how the main characters' stories were woven together. The magic system is unique in that the sorcerers are not really trained to use magic but rather prepare for death when their bodies are used as a power source for the Empire. Once I picked it up, it was hard to put down.
