When 32-year-old Ichiko gets in a fight with her sister one morning, she decides to leave her parents' house and put her family life behind her. She takes a job at a 100-yen store, and as life tries to push her down again and again, she gradually learns how to fight back and score a win for herself. 100 Yen Love might be categorized as a comedy, but it is much more of a drama that will leave viewers feeling Ichiko's grief and rage. There may be a lot of crummy characters in this movie, but above all it emphasizes one woman's unwavering strength; in a way, it is the strong female character trope done well. Content warning: fairly graphic depiction of rape.
