Faolan Kelly just lost her beloved grandfather and has been packed off to the remote fort, Settlement. Settlement has historically been an unlucky place, but under the recent guidance of His Benevolence Gideon Dillard, it has suddenly begun to thrive. As Faolan learns more about Settlement, she becomes suspicious - the people are too obedient, the wealth too mysterious, and the clawmarks outside the walls too deep to be natural.
