Explore an eclectic cast of characters from the Arab-American community in Dearborn, Michigan
This collection of loosely-intertwined short stories explores the claustrophobically close-knit community of Muslims and Arabs in the Dearborn area. The stories generally have a melancholy feel, as the various characters—mostly immigrants or first-generation Americans—struggle with feelings of homesickness, a sense of being a cultural outsider, duties to family and maintaining one's reputation that surpass one's own hopes, dreams, and wellbeing, and of course, trauma upon trauma upon generational trauma as many of the immigrants left war-torn countries. The audiobook, narrated by Sarab Kamoo and Qarie Marshall, helps you to get a feel for the different voices of the characters and also teaches the listener proper pronunciation of Arabic words which may be unfamiliar to some listeners.
