You’ll want to drink warm soup and exchange pleasantries with Lim Jihoon before the book’s end.

This story is much more “immigrants navigating a new land while yearning for their home country” than it is “spy works to discover who killed whom”. It is a book of literary fiction that just happens to be a spy thriller, just like many of its characters. They seem like something and could be something else but that doesn’t mean the first thing hasn’t become part of their identity. We see many perspectives and it can get confusing especially as the characters continually change but sticking to a few basic facts about each will help you identify individuals over time.
I hope a K-Drama comes from this, and I wish we get recipes of some of Soju Club’s most featured meals. Park Jinwoo is an author that I am excited to see more of. His stories resonate with first-generation immigrants, adopted individuals, and later-generations who are no longer migrants but are still seen as “other”.
