Naomi Kwan has wanted to take ambulance classes for years, but alas, in Victorian England, she needs permission from her fiance, husband or father before she will be allowed in. No problem, she claims the first Chinese man she sees as her permission-granting fiance. The last thing Naomi expects is for her “fiance” to open his mouth and… agree with her? Now the two are trapped in a fake engagement that must last as long as the ambulance classes do.

BUT PLOT TWIST - Naomi and her “fiance”, Kai, actually knew each other once. In fact, Kai’s father was the one who defrauded Naomi’s entire village many years ago and then fled in the night with his only son. With all that history between them, why is Kai back in Wedgeford now? 

Courtney Milan’s historical romances are always wonderful, and I have super enjoyed her Wedgeford Trials trilogy, imagining an East Asian community living and thriving in Victorian England. Her characters are unique and she rarely uses miscommunication as the plot device for a third act breakup. Milan is honestly one of my favorite romance authors and I am excited to see where she travels to after she’s done with Wedgeford.
