This manga is a historical fiction that features two rather unhinged protagonists, but the beauty of the story is watching the different ways they are unhinged smash against each other like two tidal waves, resulting in an oddly satisfying, if not equally unsettling harmony. 

One of them is sheltered but has a backbone of steel, giving them an impressive and disturbing resilience; the other commits murder for a living and comes with all the character flaws and imbalances you might expect from someone in that line of work. Where this story sets itself apart is in how it counterbalances those soft and hard forms of determination and survival instinct, creating a story that is compelling right from the outset.
