Angel in Realtime

This album helped me heal from loss and celebrate the life of my late father.

When I was first introduced to Angel in Realtime, the latest album from Gang of Youths, I listened to nothing else for three months. It conjures memories of my late father, makes me appreciate the loved ones in my life, and reflects changes I have experienced this past year. Angel in Realtime is a tribute to front man David Le'aupepe’s late father. It so accurately conveys the weight of loss that it sometimes makes me tear up. When I listen, I am reminded of my father, who lost his battle with cancer in 2020. With the help of this music, I can both morn his loss and feel joy in having loved him. I would describe "Angel in Realtime" as alt-rock, with influences of classical music, indigenous Australian folk music, and spoken word poetry. It stands out as a real work of art, intimate, complex, and lush. Despite this, the music has a hopeful, humorous, and nostalgic tone. This band never takes themselves too seriously even though they unpack serious topics. Also, Le’aupepe’s voice is swoon worthy!
