The Woman King

Empowering historical epic!

Like most historical films, Woman King isn’t perfectly historically accurate. However, what it lacks in strict accuracy it makes up for in other ways. For one, it’s rare to find pieces of media that center the stories of Africans, especially African women. The film does an excellent job of portraying the Agojie in a multidimensional way that showcases their strengths, weaknesses, and the community they found with each other. Viola Davis and Lashana Lynch give particularly good performances, and the vibrant costumes, music, and action sequences tie everything together!
