Being different is a good thing

Selah is a girl who follows rules—rules for being “normal.” These importance of these rules has been impressed upon her by her mother, who wants her daughter to have friends and fit in. Selah must hide her true feelings all day and isn’t able to relax and feel comfortable in her own skin until she is alone at home after school. Then one day a girl at her school crosses a boundary and Selah reacts by hitting her. Selah begins a journey of self discovery and learns that being different isn’t a bad thing.

As the parent of a neurodivergent adult whose public school experiences echo those of Selah, I found this book perceptive, moving, and relatable. I recommend it to anyone who wants to gain an understanding of what it means to be neurodivergent.
