Historically, there has been a tragic theme in the U.S. music industry of exploiting Black artists. In 1956 Miles Davis was still under contract with Prestige Records and due for four more releases. Davis, understanding how Prestige Records mistreated artists, was moving to sign with Columbia. As the legend goes, in just a few 1956 sessions his newly formed quintet rapidly released four records that made qualitative and quantitative music history. These four recordings comprise arguably one of, if not the greatest recording compilation of all time.
