A mysterious manuscript, a life in hiding, and a life left behind

I listened to this through Hoopla as an audiobook. I especially liked the narrator who gave a voice to the manuscript. She brought the turn-of-the-century Appalachia characters to life. I was drawn to the story just as the main character, Jen, was drawn to it. Was the story in the manuscript fiction or was it real? Is searching those questions worth enduring the pain she thought she left behind in those mountains?
