Beneath the Underdog

Charles Mingus details his gritty, unfiltered experiences growing up as an aspiring musician in Los Angeles California. This is both a memoir and a work of fiction. Whether or not certain events are true, what remains factual is the perspective readers get of this artist. What I enjoyed about this work is that it is less about music, and more about the mind of Mingus. Beneath the Underdog is a contradictory portrait of Mingus' psyche.
