The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo is the story of The Great Gatsby through the eyes of Jordan Baker—if she were a queer Vietnamese adoptee. The novel also mixes in magic and otherworldly elements to create a truly unique retelling that draws out the subtext from the original. I loved Jordan’s dry humor and blunt speech that masks a deep insecurity with her place in New York society, and Daisy and Gatsby are a terrifying delight as well. Fans of Mexican Gothic and other historical fantasy will enjoy this one.
