A gentle but realistic story that's never sappy.

Dani is a plucky Swedish girl who lives with her father but is staying with her grandparents while her dad is away.  With her grandmother’s help, Dani develops a plan to take a solo train trip to visit her friend Ella, but when Dani arrives in Ella’s town, there is no one to meet her at the station and she is stranded and alone.  How Dani copes with this scary (though not terrifying) situation is the heart of the story.

This book, which is #6 in a series, would be a good match for Cynthia Rylant’s Cobble Street Cousins, Beverley Cleary’s Ramona books, or Sara Pennypacker’s Clementine series.  In fact, Dani would make a fine literary companion for any first- or second-grader who’s not interested in dragons, weird teachers or toilet jokes.
