A novel about a terrible episode in Civil War history, told with uncompromising integrity.

Mariah, a young woman newly freed from slavery, meets Caleb, a free person of color, when she joins a group of former slaves following General Sherman’s army on its famed March to the Sea.  Despite the hardships of the journey and the protagonists’ painful backstories, Mariah and Caleb begin to fall in love, and as the army nears the outskirts of Savannah, the likable pair are ready to make a long-term commitment to one another.  But something happens at Ebenezer Creek that changes their lives – and the lives of many others - forever.

Although this book is set more than 150 years in the past, its treatment of racism is deeply relevant in the era of Black Lives Matter.  Furthermore, the theme of choosing justice over revenge through the power of redemptive love is timeless.
Thoughtful historical fiction for readers who don’t require a conventionally happy ending.
