The Black God's Drums

P. Djeli Clark's first foray into Afro-Futurism is a wonder to behold.  He has merged an alternate post-Civil War era (where neither side won) to a steampunk sensibility with magic granted to a chosen few by the gods brought over by the slaves from Africa.  All this combines into a tale of a 13 year old girl in the unaligned New Orleans as she finds out about a plot that could destroy her world.  At 107 pages, it is a quick read, but you won't want to stop until the end.
