Come from Away: A New Musical

The tragedy of September 11, 2001 seems like an unlikely topic for a Broadway musical, but Come From Away starts with that horrific day and presents an uplifting story of hope and the power of community. When the U.S. airspace was closed after the attacks, 38 planes landed in Gander, Newfoundland, where the citizens rallied to shelter and feed thousands of stranded passengers. This collection of songs highlights the stories of the Newfoundlanders and passengers alike. Sometimes touching, sometimes humorous, these songs have stayed with me long after the last note.  I especially enjoyed the way traditional folk instruments are used in the score.  I borrowed this recording from Hoopla to prepare for seeing the musical at Wharton this fall and am now even more excited to see it on stage. However, even if you can't make it to a performance, I highly recommend this soundtrack. The songs tell the story.
