The highest praise I can give a short story is that it makes me want to read a full-length novel set in the story’s world. I felt that way about every single one of the stories in this collection. Kate Elliott builds her worlds with so much care and detail that you feel immersed in each one. Elliott is also known for the richness and realism of her female characters (and addresses this point in her essays) and that holds true in all of these stories. If you enjoy short stories, or simply don’t have time to read an epic fantasy trilogy right now, give this collection a try.
