When great individual artists get together and play, magic happens!

The New Basement Tapes—Elvis Costello, Rhiannon Giddens of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, Jim James of My Mourning Jacket, and Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons—(assembled and produced by T-Bone Burnett, of course) took a collection of recently found handwritten unfinished lyrics written by Bob Dylan in 1967 and each tried their hand at finishing the songs. The result is a fascinating album with a mix of Americana, indie and alt rock styles. My favorites include “Down on the Bottom,” “Kansas City,” “Spanish Mary,” “Lost on the River #12”, “Stranger,” and “Lost on the River #20.” Fans of the individual artists (or their groups) should check this out. And anyone who seriously falls in love should look for the 20-track deluxe version. (Now available in hoopla!)
