I first learned of DePrince when she (with just a tantalizing piece of her story) was featured in a AT&T Spotlight performance on Dancing With the Stars in 2012. It was beautiful! It, in turn, sent me looking for First Position a documentary featuring her and five other competitors in the Youth American Grand Prix dance competition. Now, this lovely memoir fills in some of the gaps to the backstory of this phenomenal dancer who went from unwanted orphan tormented because of a skin condition to an international soloist.
