How to Catch a Bogle

Birdie may be an illiterate orphan living in a tough part of London, but she's also a proud and plucky apprentice to Alfred Bunce, who is a bogler - a hunter of all manner of child-gobbling creatures.  Using her lovely singing voice, Birdie acts as bogle bait, distracting the beasties so Alfred can dispatch them with his trusty spear.  Birdie's life continues in this fashion until she and Alfred attract the attention of Miss Eames, a proper British lady who hopes to guide Birdie into a more genteel - and much safer - lifestyle.

 

This thrilling and slightly scary book is a good choice for listeners (or readers) who enjoy rich historical detail and lots of dialogue featuring working-class Victorian slang.
