John Adams was a, short, plain-spoken shoemaker's son who loved nothing more than a good argument.  Thomas Jefferson was a tall, scholarly plantation- (and slave-) owner who prefered writing to talking.  What brought them together was a shared vision of the American colonies as an independent nation.
