Lady Knight

Tamora Pierce is a prolific young adult fantasy author who's known for her strong female protagonists.  But even within Pierce's universe of memorable heroines, the main character of this book - teenaged Keladry of Mindelan - stands out.  Kel is a sturdy, level-headed girl who relies on perserverence, will power, and compassion to make it in a world where few girls become knights.  Furthermore, although some of Kel's associates have magical powers to aid them, she does not.

 

Lady Knight is set in a Medieval-flavored universe, and Pierce does a fine job world building as she brings in influences from places that are analogous to Scandinavia, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.  (Kel's weapon of choice is modeled after the Japanese naginata). 

 

Oh, and let's not forget monsters!  Pierce creates some of the creepiest mythical beasts in all of fantasy literature.  Wait 'til you hear what hideous flying beasts they have in place of vultures and see if you agree!
