The singer/songwriter and former member of the Drive-By Truckers offers a great range of songs with thoughtful lyrics of loss, regret, and happiness. Bordering on Country, Folk, and Rock with the borderline murder ballad like “Yvette,” the rocking “Super 8,” and “Elephant”—about the elephant in the room in the relationship between a man and his cancer-ridden girlfriend. My favorites include “Live Oak,” “New South Wales” and “Relatively Easy.” These aren’t the stories of necessarily “good” men—more of men who have lived, have regrets and are moving on—all with a gritty feel. Fans of Gary Allen and John Hiatt should give this a listen.
