The Golem and the Jinni

Jewish and Arabian mythologies combine on the streets of New York in 1899.

This is a thoughtful and fascinating story of magic and everyday life in turn of the century New York. The Golem finds herself alone with no master on a boat approaching Ellis Island, while the Jinni is freed from his lamp in a tinsmith’s shop. Circumstances will bring them together and push them apart—their magic set against a detailed historical backdrop. Wecker’s debut is a fabulous story and I can happily vouch for the audiobook read by George Guidall. Fans of Susanna Clarke, Neil Gaiman, Erin Morganstern or Elizabeth Hand should give this a try.
