Trace Your Roots This March with Our Free Family History Series

The series runs on Saturday mornings on Zoom, so you can dig into your past from the comfort of your couch. Each session is led by a different expert, and they’re designed to work whether you’re brand new to genealogy or you’ve been at it for years.
Registration is required for each session. Sign up online or call us at (517) 367-6350. Once you’re registered, we’ll email you a Zoom link a few days before each program.
Genealogy 101: Getting Started! – Saturday, March 7, 11 a.m.–noon
Professional genealogist Ginger Ogilvie walks you through the basics: where to begin, what records to look for and how to organize what you find. If you’ve been meaning to start your family history but weren’t sure where to dig in, this is it.
Time To Hit the Books – Saturday, March 14, 11 a.m.–noon
Yearbooks, alumni lists and school records can tell you more about your ancestors than you’d expect – the clubs they joined, the friends they kept, the communities they lived in. Library of Michigan Librarian Adam Oster and our own Local History Librarian Heidi Butler will show you how to find these resources, including CADL’s digitized Ingham County Yearbook Collection.
Criminals in the Family Tree – Saturday, March 21, 11 a.m.–noon
Not every ancestor was a model citizen. Genealogy expert Kim Harrison will talk about uncovering the criminals in her own family and walk you through the records that can help you piece together those stories.
Genetic Genealogy Today – Saturday, March 28, 11 a.m.–noon
Have you taken a DNA test but are not sure what to do with the results? Genealogy expert and author Richard Hill breaks down the three major test types, compares five leading companies, and shares third-party tools that can help you get more from your data.
