What happens when a bear wanders into a campsite? When a bird shuts down a construction project? When a tree falls on a car and nobody’s sure who’s liable? These are the kinds of questions Mary Roach digs into in Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law.
The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), designed to bring communities together through shared reading. This year’s Big Read is all about Fuzz. If you haven’t read Mary Roach before, expect deeply researched science writing that reads like your funniest friend explaining something wild they just learned. Fuzz covers everything from bears raiding camps to elephants trampling crops to the legal history of putting animals on trial.
Tue, March 10 and 17, 5:30–6:30 p.m., CADL Downtown Lansing
These two sessions are for anyone who wants to try their hand at writing about the natural world. You’ll learn how to write personal essays, reflections and creative nonfiction inspired by the themes in Fuzz. No experience necessary, just bring something to write with.
In partnership with Arts Midwest, National Endowment for the Arts, and CADL, MidMEAC is hosting events focused on “Our Nature: How Our Physical Environment Can Lead Us to Seek Hope, Courage, and Connection”. Learn More About MidMEAC and The Big Read.
