The Death of Jane Lawrence

If you're looking for both thrills *and* chills...

When Jane decides she wants to marry the doctor as a strictly business arrangement to secure her future, she knows she's much too practical to get in over her head. Unfortunately, the woman who wields impossible magic to banish horrible spirits and the one who sets magic aside and finds happiness with a man who is not totally real are completely unrecognizable from that Jane of the first few chapters. I loved the way this story used recognizable tropes and subgenres and morphed them into an engaging, if somewhat complicated, plot. Haunted house, body horror, medical gore, demons and spirits, psychological thrills, misdirection, black magic-- it's all here and it had me turning page after page, not to mention keeping the lights on at night.
I recommend this one for fans of historical, paranormal horror
