Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism

It’s more pervasive than you think!

When one thinks of the word “cult,” infamous groups such as Peoples Temple (Jonestown), The Branch Davidians, and Heaven’s Gate come to mind. Most of us want to think that we’re smart enough not to get involved in one of these destructive groups. But not so fast, don’t be so quick to believe that most are above it all. According to Montell, the language of fanaticism is all around us, and is frequently used by many groups and individuals in our society to manipulate others. In the book she cites numerous examples such as social media influencers, multilevel marketing companies, fitness cults, high demand religions, certain cooperate training programs and extremist political groups. It’s definitely a timely and thought-provoking read, especially for all you “armchair sociologists” out there.
