Survival on Isle Royale

In the late summer of 1845, Angelique Mott, a young Ojibway woman, and her voyageur husband Charlie Mott, agreed to spend the winter on Isle Royale to oversee a copper mining venture spearheaded by a group of Detroit businessmen.  And although the Motts were promised a shipload of provisions before winter set in, the vessel never materialized, so Angelique and Charlie eventually had to rely on their outdoor skills to fend off starvation.

Though the last half of the movie is a harrowing tale of survival, the wilderness scenery is always spectacular, even as it threatens Angelique’s life.  According to the credits, much of the movie was filmed on Lake Superior’s north shore, and never once did I as the viewer feel that I was anywhere else besides the Northwoods.
