A New Punk Twist on 1950's Love Songs with a dash of Stevie Nicks

This is the kind of album that invites you to listen to it over and over again.  With synths reminiscent of 1980's indie underground bands punctuated with psychedelic guitar solos, this album is like running across an old favorite cassette in your parent's basement and discovering that you only ever listened to the "A" side.  It's retro like a familiar friend, but with a fresh and new twist. Her lyrics are heartfelt, sad for unrequited love, yet hopeful. Angel Olsen's voice pulls off the growls of Stevie Nicks, the upper range closer to Kate Bush.  She captures what it feels like to be a young woman who is an artist, summed up in a song aptly named "Woman":

"With no promise of the future am I not allowed,
To think kindly of a stranger who reflects the sound of my heartache...
And I could still breathe for you, open up and scream for you,
Tell me what I wouldn't do, tell me that love isn't true,

I dare you to understand what makes me a woman..."
