Rejected Princesses: Tales of Heroines, Hellions & Heretics

I don’t think it will come as a surprise to anyone that we often do not learn about women’s stories in our history classes. In this book, Jason Porath attempts to rectify that by taking a look at 100 women from history and mythology. With a combination of animation-style illustrations and conversational text, these stories provide a look at women we often forget, from a 5th century Algerian queen to a 9th century pope to the Russian Night Witches of WWII, and many more.

 

As a side note, society is not always kind to women who step outside of their “place” and some of the histories collected here are more violent than others. The author includes warnings at the beginning of each woman’s section, so readers can judge for themselves which stories are appropriate for them.
