Aaaagggghhh . . . Nazis on the Moon!

This movie deserves some kind of award for flat-out weirdness. Check out the plot:  At the end of World War II, a gang of Nazis escape Europe and set up shop on the moon, where ever since they’ve been secretly building a fleet of armed warships with the intention of conquering Earth. And everything’s been going just fine for the jackbooted jerks – until a modern-day African-American astronaut stumbles upon their compound. Though the astronaut is captured and, for want of a better term, “aryanized” by an archetypal mad scientist, he’s a plucky survivor and the world’s only hope for salvation from the Nazi menace.

Tongue-in-cheek silliness abounds: soldiers traversing the moon’s surface in trench coats and gas masks; an egotistical U.S. president who looks like a certain ex-governor of Alaska; a villainous political advisor whose first question upon being promoted is “What should I wear?” (Her answer: a tight leather catsuit with stylized wings); or the Nazi super destroyer that’s powered by a modern smartphone.  But for all that, this picture isn’t out to insult your intelligence. There are plenty of American and European cultural references, and many of the actors appear to be fully bilingual. In fact, the actress who plays the female lead (Julia Dietze) is rather convincing as a Nazi propagandist who can deliver the goods in either German or English.

All told, this is a cheeky and enjoyable piece of dieselpunk satire.
