Annihilation

A Sci Fi thriller packed with haunting description and heaps of unusual biology.

As far as fiction goes I am personally drawn to sci fi and horror titles that radiate emotions of existential horror and a sense of dread. VanderMeer's writing style sets this tone very well for me while piquing my scientific interests, namely biology in this case. The story follows a group of armed scientists who have to investigate an expanding zone called "Area X" that consumes and mutates the life it touches. However, they are the twelfth expedition following eleven others that suffered psychological damage and even death after entering "Area X". A great and relatively short read to start off this terrifyingly intriguing three-part series.
