Is it possible to be too comfortable around ghosts?

Pre-teen Shelley has grown up contentedly in her small family unit consisting of herself, her mom, and her maternal grandmother.  In fact, Shelley has been happy to accompany her Cree grandma on ‘jobs’ – finding ghosts and convincing them to move on – and wants very much to follow Grandma into what she considers the family business. But Shelley’s mom is worried that her daughter’s preoccupation with the spirit world has prevented her from fully embracing life, and she tries to prevent the girl from getting more deeply involved with ghosts.  A terrible tragedy that occurs near the middle of the story makes Shelley’s situation even more untenable.

This story about hereditary supernatural skills would make a good companion to Ellen Oh’s "Spirit Hunters" series.  (Though The Ghost Collector ghosts are much less scary.  Some, in fact, are downright adorable.)
