Rudger is Amanda's imaginary friend who no one else can see except sinister Mr. Bunting who hunts imaginaries and destroys them.  How does an imaginary survive when the real friend who made him up is growing up and losing touch with her imaginary friend? He meets some other imaginaries who must help him before they disappear too.
