If you are looking for an old fashion, fun, private detective story, you need to check out Gone to Dust written by Matt Goldman.  Goldman was a writer for Seinfeld and this is his first book in a series of mysteries brimming with irreverent, dry humor.  In it Nils Shapiro, a Jewish, former police detective turned private eye, is hired by the Minneapolis police to investigate a brutal murder.  Nils has an appealing combination of vulnerability and toughness.  This book is full of sharp wit, memorable characters and local color. It is a fun, quick read.
