Told from the perspectives of Tran Dieu Lan, who had to flee with her six children during the land reform, and her granddaughter Hương, who is a young teenager as her parents leave to fight in the Vietnam War.
This is a story about survival and what it means to leave a legacy for your family. Written by a Vietnamese author, this provides an air of authenticity and clarity not often witnessed. Nguyen, also a poet, shows her lyrical writing style through this multi-generational family history.
