The Truth According to Blue

Two girls, one dog, and sunken treasure!

Blue, who has type I diabetes, is sick of being defined by her medical condition and wants to spend her thirteenth summer out on Gardiner’s Bay searching for a long-lost treasure ship with her service dog Otis.  But those plans change when Blue’s mother forces the young treasure hunter to pal around with Jules, the seemingly spoiled daughter of a famous movie star who’s in town to host a diabetes benefit.

This is an exciting, action-filled tale with a rich backstory that includes family secrets and local legends, all set in a modern, rich-versus-working class Long Island community.  It’s also about growing up, and most of us will sympathize with Blue as she navigates the rewards and perils of making new friends.  And though Blue personally rejects her unchosen role as “diabetes girl,” the reader can’t help admiring her fortitude – and that of her loved ones - as they cope with a potentially deadly disease that sometimes requires minute-by-minute attention.

Readers who enjoyed R.J. Palacio’s “Wonder” may find similar inspiration here, plus anyone in the mood for girl-centered adventure should find this book easy to like.
