A terrifyingly timely look at the consequences of climate change

In the midst of a California drought, Alyssa’s family and neighbors are used to the water restrictions. They might have to use less, but at least they still have water to drink. Until the day the taps stop working. WIth the water dried up, the closest reservoirs too low to help, and the desalination plants worn out, chaos and riots engulf the city, and Alyssa finds herself with a group of other teens in search of water, safety and their families. But with only a single pack of bottled water to last them the trip, the danger that one of the group might turn on the others increases with every passing moment. Shusterman’s work is always amazing, and this book is certainly no exception. It’s a stressful read, made more so by the fact that it could happen in the near future, but that is also what makes it so important.
