The Family Romanov

In reading The Family Romanov, one gets the impression that Tsar Nicholas Romanov was less an unfeeling tyrant preying on the misery of starving peasants and more a hapless figurehead caught up in historical forces that were beyond his ability to control.  When he fell, his family fell with him, and this book does a fine job recreating the last days of the tsar and tsarina, the four grand duchesses (Olga, Tatiana, Maria, and Anastasia) and young prince Alexey.

 

Candace Fleming is among a handful of authors who write really excellent history for young people, so readers who like Steve Sheinkin, Lauren Tarshis, Russell Freedman, or Jim Murphy will appreciate this book.
