Stan Slater may be only 12 years old, but he figures he’s ready to become a manly lumberjack like Ole or Stinky Pete rather than a lowly pot-scrubber in the camp kitchen run by his mother, aunt, and granny.  And don’t even mention the humiliations regularly dished out by his bossy cousin Geraldine that he must heroically endure. 

 

Stan is one of a long line of plucky rogues who grace the pages of children’s literature – Huck Finn, The Great Brain, Junie B. Jones, Homer P. Figg, and Big Nate are all his literary cousins. 

 

This story is enlivened by reproductions of authentic late Victorian advertising artwork that Stan has humorously annotated and pasted into his scrapbook.
