A beautiful exercise in empathy and understanding.
This is a story about a group of adults who cannot seem to get themselves together, and a young man with Autism who has to learn to understand and process this fact in his own way. Being told from the point of view of Christopher means that the reader sees his world through the lense of Autism, which at once knocks the reader off balance and provides an uncommonly interesting point of view. As Christopher uncovers new information about his life and his parents, the reader wishes that the people around him could get the look that we get into his brain, and understand just a little better how it works. And then, you have to keep turning the page to find out who committed the murder, of course.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime would be great for readers who enjoyed Wonder by R.J. Palacio, Rules by Cynthia Lord, or Speechless (ABC)
