The Violin Conspiracy
As a young man, Rayquan's grandmother gives him her grandfather's violin, that he was gifted by his enslaver when he was set free. Ray loves playing a family instrument and he proves to be very good; he plays weddings with high school classmates and progresses to stage performing. Unbeknownst to him, the instrument is determined to be a rare 18th century Stradivarius, and everyone wants to get their hands on it! His extended family wants to sell it and the former enslavers’ family claims it is still theirs. With all this turmoil in the background and Rayquan preparing for a major competition, his violin is stolen, and a ransom note is left in the case. Ray just wants to play his violin and try to win a competition a black American has never won. The story moves along at a good pace, it’s a thriller and a coming-of-age story. The authors’ descriptions of the instruments and the melodies depict an undeniable appreciation for both. The story motivated me to head over to Hoopla and download some violin concertos.
